The architecture of Nyhavn is defined by its colorful, centuries-old townhouses that line both sides of the canal. The façades of these buildings, painted in vivid shades of red, yellow, and blue, reflect Copenhagen’s maritime spirit and create one of the city’s most photographed skylines. The oldest house, No. 9, built in 1681, still stands largely unchanged, offering a glimpse into the harbor’s long and storied past.

Nyhavn, meaning “New Harbor,” was constructed in the 17th century as a commercial port linking Copenhagen’s inner city to the sea. In its early days, it was a lively but rough district filled with sailors and taverns. After the harbor was closed to commercial traffic in 1977, Nyhavn was revitalized into the pedestrian-friendly attraction it is today, filled with restaurants, cafés, and live music. The famous author Hans Christian Andersen once lived in Nyhavn, residing in several different houses along the canal.

The central axis of Frederiksstaden forms a perfectly aligned vista that connects Frederik’s Church (Marmorkirken), Amalienborg Palace, and the harbor (past the fountain in Amaliehaven). This grand alignment was conceived to embody harmony between faith, monarchy, and the people, visually linking the spiritual, political, and civic heart of Denmark.

The equestrian statue in the middle of Amalienborg Palace square commemorates King Frederik V, the founder of Frederiksstaden. It took over 20 years to complete and cost nearly as much as one of the palaces themselves.

Established by King Frederik III, the Royal Life Guards serve both as the ceremonial protectors of the royal family and as an active regiment in the Danish Army. Recognizable by their dark blue uniforms, white cross-belts, and tall bearskin hats, they stand watch outside Amalienborg Palace. Beyond their ceremonial duties, the guards are fully trained soldiers who serve in national defense and international missions.

Amalienborg Palace comprises of four Rococo palaces arranged around an octagonal square. Amalienborg has served as the home of the Danish royal family since the late 18th century after a fire destroyed Christiansborg Palace, the royal residence at the time. Built to celebrate the Oldenburg dynasty, Amalienborg remains a living symbol of Danish monarchy and Enlightenment-era design.

Frederik’s Church, or Marmorkirken (The Marble Church), was initiated by King Frederik V and took over 150 years to complete. Due to financial difficulties and changes in the monarchy, construction was halted for nearly a century. The church’s grand dome was inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The inscription above the entrance, “HERRENS ORD BLIVER EVINDELIG” (“The word of the Lord endureth forever”), reflects the church’s history— despite decades of abandonment and redesign, it endures as one of Copenhagen’s most iconic landmarks.

The Milky Way, a barred spiral galaxy of more than 100 billion stars, arcs above us as a reminder of the vast cosmos in which Earth quietly drifts. From the Dark Sky site in Jamestown, Tennessee, this view is safeguarded, allowing the night to reveal itself in its natural clarity. Looking upward, we meet both the immensity of space and the quiet of our own thoughts.

Among the many spring blooms in the gardens of the Biltmore Estate, the pink tulips most caught my eye. Tulips have been cultivated since the 10th century in Persia and Turkey, and as cut flowers, they can last up to 10 days in a well-cared-for vase.

At the Cradle of Forestry Discovery Center in the Pisgah National Forest, visitors can see how the work of early foresters shifted from tradition to technology. Horse-drawn carriages once carried people, supplies, and heavy logs through the rugged mountain terrain. Over time, steam-powered engine introduced new possibilities, replacing muscle with mechanical force. Belts and pulleys driven by steam could power sawmills and winches, making logging faster and more efficient while transforming forestry into an industrial enterprise.

Biltmore, the last grand echo of Gilded Age, is the largest privately owned home in the US. Among the estate’s many treasures, the library was my favorite. At age 12, George Vanderbilt started logging the books he read into a journal. By the time of his death, he had collected more than 23,000 volumes, over 10,000 of which are housed in the library at Biltmore. The books he collected were sent to be bound in Moroccan leather and decorated with gilt lettering before being placed on the Biltmore bookshelves.

Bright colored rail speeders like this one at Cookville Depot Museum were used by railway workers to inspect tracks, perform maintenance, and travel short distances on rail lines. They were phased out over time and replaced by more modern hi-rail trucks, but they remain a nostalgic piece of railroad history.

Cookville Railroad Depot was built in 1909, passenger trains ceased operation in 1950s. It was an important political and economic milestone for the region, bringing urbanization and development to Cookville. The depot was added to National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The outside museum display features a Tennessee Central steam engine, a boxcar, and a red caboose.

The 1.5-mile trail was well worth the effort to see Burgess Falls plunge over 130 feet into a limestone gorge. The gorge’s rock layers were carved over three major geological periods. Before becoming a state-protected natural area in 1971, the site once housed a hydroelectric dam that supplied electricity to the nearby city of Cookeville. Its unique combination of geological beauty, rich heritage, powerful water features, and easy access make it a standout destination in Tennessee.

The swans on the River Thames at Windsor are considered the property of the British monarch. The tradition dates back to the 12th century, when the Crown claimed ownership of all unmarked swans in open waters throughout England and Wales. While the monarch technically holds this right across the country, it is primarily exercised along specific stretches of the River Thames, which includes this area at Windsor.

Windsor bridge built in 1824 connects Windsor and Eton across River Thames. Due to concerns over bridge’s structural integrity, it was closed to motor vehicles in 1970, and is now a pedestrian bridge with gorgeous views.
